Tsubomi Yozakura (夜桜 つぼみ, Yozakura Tsubomi) is the first head of the Yozakura Family and a prisoner who was experimented on by Makoto Kawashita during World War II.
Appearance[]
Tsubomi was seen to have a striking resemblance to Mutsumi Yozakura with the main difference being the colors of their hair being swapped, with Tsubomi having white hair with a blue streak. Tsubomi was also seen to have the branches of a cheery blossom tree growing out of the right side of her body. Its unknown if this is an ability of hers or a result of the experiments made by Kawashita.
After years, the cherry blossom tree from her body grew until her body was partially submerged in one, making her unable to use her legs.
After being heavily damaged by Momo Yozakura, as her body regenerated she took the appearance of her child self, being much smaller. She lacks an arm and leg in this form. After being captured by Asa for 5 years, her body once again became combined with a tree.
Personality[]
Tsubomi is shown to be quite a calm person, keeping her composure whilst being experimented on by Kawashita. She seems to lament her position as the First Head of the Yozakura Family and feels tormented by it. As a result she feels like she'd do anything to become ordinary and is concentrated about killing all of her descendants, being selfish and heartless with that decision.
History[]
When Tsubomi was born, her mother died during birth[2] but she ended up having special powers since childhood. She had the power to heal people, and spend her days travelling to different villages with her father Asa and healing the people, being worshipped as a child of the gods.[3] Despite travelling around and healing villages, Asa believed it wasn't the best use of her powers and he began dismembering and dissecting Tsubomi to use her body parts as medicine to give out. Despite being able to heal from the injuries, Tsubomi still experienced all the pain of the dissections. Eventually their deeds reached the ear of the emperor who granted her clan status, which led to the creation of the Yozakura Family.
Tsubomi was the first head of the Yozakura Family and during her lifetime ended up being captured and imprisoned by the government. She was later handed over to Kawashita in order for him to make experiments on her in order to give the Japanese Army the powers of the Yozakura blood.
Tsubomi had grown to resent her power and status as the first head of the Yozakura Family and she wishes to become like an ordinary person. Her ideals also connect with Kawashita's who wishes that more people could have the Yozakura powers, leading to him coming up with the Seed-Sowing Project. The research they made was unable to create good results due to the strength of Tsubomi's power. She plans to be reborn as an ordinary person which would involve wiping out the existence of the Yozakura Family even if it calls for sacrificing all her descendants.
At the end of the war, the government would erase all traces of the project and hand over Tsubomi to an enemy country due to her research value, in exchange for many of its leaders to avoid trial. Kawashita himself was shot, but not wanting to give her up, he sets off an explosion at the lab that wipes out the soldiers. To see the future that Kawashita spoke of, Tsubomi imparted him with some of her blood, saving him and making him immortal like her. The two then escaped the island, hid in the "shadows of history" and founded Tanpopo to make their wish a reality.
Plot[]
While Taiyo was fighting Kawashita, the blood of the Heads inside both of them resonated, causing Taiyo to see memories of his past and Tsubomi.
After Kawashita's defeat, Tsubomi talked to him telepathically, thanking him for everything and bidding him farewell. She also promises to not let his foundation go to waste and will have "him" take over his research.
Taiyo's hesitation to reveal what he saw to the family allows the Chizakura, Tsubomi's blood which Kawashita injected into him, to take him over and cause his Blooming to go berserk. However, Tsubomi's voice manifested inside Taiyo's head and helped him overcome this by thinking of a reason to live, Mutsumi. Due to her blood, Tsubomi can invade Taiyo's mind, and she asks him to kill her.
She explains that there's two version of herself — the past self and the current self — and that she could only awaken for a brief time while the other is asleep. The "old" Tsubomi is simple, her story is contained within the Book of Buds up until the modern times, but the problem is the "current" Tsubomi. As time passes, the memories they share are no longer the same (suggesting some kind of split personality). The only one who actually knows her current self is Kawashita, but he's too ensnared with that version of Tsubomi that her voice can't reach him. To contact Kawashita unsupervised, Taiyo would need a silver spy license and the Book of Buds, which she teaches him how to open. As the other Tsubomi begins to wake up, this Tsubomi starts to fade, telling Taiyo it's up to him to decide whether this encounter was real or just a bad dream.
During the final stage of Taiyo's silver rank exam, Tsubomi manifested in front of Taiyo as he was about to fail. Hearing the cries and desperation in his heart, Tsubomi awakens her blood inside of him - giving him the Profuse Blooming of 10,000 Flowers. She warns him that it will harm his body if he cannot control it and her visage leaves.
Abilities and Skills[]
Tsubomi is the first head of the Yozakura Family and is the source and progenitor of the unique genetic abilities possessed by all her descendants. As noted by her father, Tsubomi body is essentially made entirely of Someinine and this affords her multiple unique abilities, along with a unique physiology;
- Blooming: As the founder and progenitor of the Yozakura Family, Tsubomi is likely the original user of Blooming and due to her unique physiology, Tsubomi’s Blooming is completely different from that of her descendants.
- Immortality: Much like her father, Tsubomi has shown to possess a degree of immortality. Having notably been able to live for hundreds of years and outlive six generations of her descendants without being affected by age or sickness. As implied by Asa, conventional methods of killing will not end Tsubomi’s life either, implying that she also possess immense durability and regenerative powers.
- Life giving: It is mentioned by Tsubomi that all life around her needs no water or sunlight (when referring to a flower), suggesting that Tsubomi can keep things alive without them needing any nutrients. Tsubomi is able to heal any wound or disease just by holding her hand to it.[3] Each of her body parts also held healing and life giving properties when consumed including; healing the blind, re-growing limbs and granting more years onto a person's life.[4] Later, her father was able to use her body parts in order to create entirely new organisms. As shown where by using all four of Tsubomi’s limbs and silvers of Rei Yozakura, the ninth head’s heart, he was able to create Kazu, Nii, Mitsu and Yo. Using some strands of her hair, Asa was able to create a gigantic, Kaiju like octopus named Legion.
- Roots: As noted by her daughter, Ninomae Yozakura and the fifth head, Itsuwa Yozakura, Tsubomi has various “roots” extended all over Japan and she can use these roots to absorb and devour human beings within their designated location. As shown with the Ninomae Manor and Yozakura Silk Mill.
- Resurrection: As first shown with her daughter, the second Yozakura Head and Itsuwa, the fifth Head, Tsubomi possess the power to revive and resurrect the dead, notably turning them into beings who are comprised mostly of Someinine such as herself. As shown, Tsubomi had successfully revived all of the previous Yozakura Heads, likely from the seventh to second generation of her family.
Relationships[]
Makoto Kawashita: During Tsubomi's time being a test subject of Kawashita, the two bonded with Kawashita telling her about the outside world and them both having similar ideals of making the Yozakura Family lose their status by making their powers no longer special.
Trivia[]
- The name Tsubomi (つぼみ) means "Bud", which refers to the early stages of a flower blooming. This also relates to how she was the beginning of the Yozakura Family and their powers to bloom.
